Didgeridoo

Click to hear Yarramunua playing the Didgeridoo
The didgeridoo is the oldest wind instrument in the world. The Aboriginal people believe it is the second oldest sound, the first being the voice and the second the didgeridoo. The traditional purpose for the didgeridoo was for playing during a corroboree. A corroberee is an Aboriginal dance ceremony performed to help bring water to the land.
Yarramunua's didgeridoos are made from Mallee Eucalyptus, Bloodwood, Stringy bark and Ironbark. Their holes are made in the natural way - "They're chewed out by white - ants." It takes approximately 100 years for white - ants to hollow a piece of tree to the length required for a didgeridoo. All Yarramunua's didgeridoos are cleaned and treated. As these instruments are naturally hollowed out and come from naturally grown trees, no two didgeridoos are the same: each instrument has its own unique character. The longer the didgeridoo the deeper the sound, and the smaller ones have a higher pitch. Yarramunua's didgeridoos are hand-carved using the natural features and bumps on the branches to create raised goannas, turtles, serpents, barramundi, kangaroos and emus. Yarramunua looks at the natural shape of the branch to decide the final design. Just by looking at the raw branch, he sees the finished product before he even starts working on it.
Yarramunua not only designs and creates the art, but with the help from members of his family, he carves, burns and paints each didgeridoo. He is also an accomplished player, with his own CD called Yarramunua Red. Yarramunua's didgeridoo playing talents have resulted in him playing on stage with Van Halen and Porno For Pyros, and he has also performed privately for Prince, AC/DC, Stevie Wonder, Eminem and Englebert Humperdink. He has also met and designed customised didgeridoos for Snoop Dog and Eminem.
Yarramunua's hand designed and crafted didgeridoos are perfect birthday gift ideas if you are looking for unique gifts for men or women. The didgeridoo is played by many wind instrument musicians to practice breathing and to build up the diaphram. They are also known to help asthma sufferers by helping develop circular breathing techniques to stave off attacks.
The design, painting, burn work and carvings on the listed didgeridoos will always be the same, although the exact shape of each didgeridoo my vary slightly according to the unique shape of each piece of wood used. The average didgeridoo length is 55 inches. If you purchase a Didgeridoo we recommend you also get the cultural and educational video or DVD that offers Yarramunua's step by step instructions on how to play the didgeridoo.
